Mission

Micro Water Facility (MWF) is inspired by the vision of a world in which all people have access to a reliable source of clean water and have proper sanitation, thereby empowering them to improve their lives through better health, food security, education and livings standards. Our mission is to provide increasing access to water and sanitation to 1,000,000 poor people in the next 5 years by supporting 10 successful social businesses or projects.

Realising innovative 'business-wise' solutions

In keeping with the Millennium Development Goals, MWF supports the realisation of innovative solutions that bring safe drinking water and proper sanitation within greater reach of those deprived of these in developing countries. To secure continuity MWF believes solutions must generate revenues needed to finance operations and growth.

Millennium Development Goals

Clean drinking water, good sanitation and hygiene are the basic requirements for good public health and development. About 900 million people worldwide have no access to clean drinking water and 2.6 billion people do not have adequate sanitary facilities.

In Africa on average 40% of the population do not have a supply of clean drinking water; in the rural areas the proportion is more than 50%. Most people living in Sub-Saharan Africa are exposed to diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria, dengue fever, schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and trachoma.

These diseases are linked to a lack of clean drinking water. The Millennium Development Goals aim to halve the scale of these problems, but this will require a considerable increase in the efforts made by Western countries. (Data from WHO/UNICEF 2005)
