Safi Sana is a Ghana based company that treats waste from toilets, market places and turns it into biogas (and electricity) and a high value fertilizer. MWF supported Safi Sana in developing a sound business model in 2009. Now Safi Sana sked MWF to revise the business model and support Safi Sana management in finding the right type of financiers needed to scale up the commercial pilot.
Based on our experience working on the rapid assessment assignment, MWF advised the Dutch Embassies in Accra and Nairobi how to finance the proposed activities in the Water and Sanitation section of their Multi Annual Strategic Plans. MWF proposed innovative financial mechanisms that support Dutch Development Policy in leveraging private sector funding.
Part of the Dutch Development Aid program on water is the PPP Water Facility, currently known as Fund Sustainable Water. MWF advised on the financial modalities of this facility, using MWF's know how on setting up and financing public private partnerships on Water and Sanitation.
Dutch Development Aid focuses amongst others on the theme 'Water'. Aid focuses on 15 target countries, five of these countries intensify the official development budget on water. MWF advised how proposed activities in the Multi Annual Strategic Plans of Embassies can be financed in such a way the Dutch AID leverages private sector money and engages Dutch expertise and know how on water and sanitation.
In December 2010 a consortium composed of the Ecological Management Foundation (EMF), the Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), Voltea - a company of Unilever Ventures, the Proportion Foundation, Micro Water Facility and Akvo, was awarded a substantial grant to launch an ambitious project designed to provide safe drinking water in areas of Bangladesh affected by serious arsenic contamination and salinity problems.
Peepoople MWF is assisting the company in writing a business plan, building a consortium of launching customers and relevant organisations, and enhancing the business model based on the outcome of the pre pilot. Peepoople, a Swedish–based social venture, conducted several field tests in 2009 that revealed wide acceptance of the Peepoo bag as a sanitation alternative. Together with Simavi MWF raised the funds needed to finance a Initial Launch Project, a commercial pilot, launching the peepoo bag in Kibera, Nairobi providing 30.000 people with a decent toilet facility. Akvo Working in close cooperation with the Akvo management team, MWF developed a solid business plan and actively participated in the process of finding financial partners. To date MWF raised over €2 million. Akvo is the open source for water and sanitation. It harnesses the most open, adaptive and collaborative principles to date – the open source movement – to meet the challenges of providing clean water and sanitation to those who need them. Akvo will act as a Wikipedia for water and sanitation knowledge and as an eBay and YouTube for water and sanitation projects, all rolled into one. Read more: www.akvo.org
Aqua-Aero WaterSystems Aqua-Aero WaterSystems BV (AAWS) is a flexible and independent Dutch company, committed to developing, producing and marketing sustainable quality solutions for water needs around the world. MWF supports AAWS in launching their product portfolio on developing markets by creating effective business models.
Simavi MWF helped Simavi create a sustainable revenue model for one of its projects with the aim of attracting different types of funding. In 2011, MWF explored the possibility of setting up a Micro Finance Fund to finance water household connections in Lilongwe and Blantyre, Malawi. This was part of a joint EU-financed project with Vitens Evides International. In 2011 MWF monitores the business performance of the Peepoo business in Kenya, a commercial pilot financed by the National Postcode Lotery.
Clean Water Now! The Naïade is a stand-alone water purification unit for rural areas in developing countries. In 2003, inventor-engineer Dick van Dijk and his business associate Evert Groeneveld started the company Clean Water Now! BV to market the Naïade and other sustainable water treatment equipment in developing countries. MWF is assisting CWN! in setting up local businesses in India and Africa to sell and distribute the Naïade.
On May 12th the first Sujol plant was opened officially. This plant produces 200 liters an hours. The water quality is within Bangladeshi standards. The plant reduces Salinity up till 97% and Arsenic from 370 ppm to 30 ppm. Sujol water taste nearly as good as mineral water and beats the taste of water treated by comparable alternatives easily.
